Here it iss!!

The Minds’ Shield

“Oh River, take this from someone with experience: you’ve got to learn to live, or you’ll end up dying before you’re ever even born to begin with.” Vix fell back onto the forest-colored lounge chair that lay against the wall to the right of the bed within the small bedroom, his curls of dark red hair falling partly over his pooling green eyes. He was wearing a grin that could convince anyone that he owned the place - but not Vivere, of course.

“That makes no sense, Vixen. I’ve obviously already been born, as I'm standing before you right now.” He scowls at the man, brow furrowing as his own hair, in a deep black coloring, fell forward, curtaining his face to where you could only partly make out his deep brown eyes resting above the dark circles just below. Vivere clenched his jaw before roughly moving his hair back and out of his face once more with his left hand.

Drip.

Vix let out a chuckle, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees and resting his face in his palms. “River, River, River. You know precisely what I meant.”

Vivere stood up from his previous perch on the edge of the bed, the movement causing his hair to fall back into place over his eyes, which made his eye twitch aggressively. He stiffly shoved the hair back with his left hand once more, glaring at Vix. “I have no clue as to what you’re trying to tell me, Vixen. You’re speaking in tongues, and I honestly don't understand as to why I ever expected to understand your rambling in the first place.” He scowled down at Vix with the man grinning back up at him. His brow furrows farther as he became increasingly agitated at how unserious his companion was.

Vix's grin grew with the man's annoyance. “You’re so easy to anger, River. It’s quite amusing.” He cocked his head to the side, sneering up from his perch on the lounge chair at Vivere.

A strand of Viveres hair fell back into his face, and the man grunted in annoyance, stuffing it back with his left hand for the hundredth time. “You’re impossible, you teasing scoundrel.” He practically snarled at the other man, nose scrunching in distaste before he stomped out of the room.

Vivere pauses at the door momentarily to make a final remark. “And must I remind you, this is my house, so don't act so... so...” He gestured vaguely with his left arm towards the man. “So at home.”

He huffed once more, seemingly satisfied with his ending statement before hastily making his way out of the room, closing the door behind him.

The clock read 10:55, or so it did for Vivere that is. He angrily moved about, taking steps that were precisely separate from one another. He made his way hastily down the staircase, his perpetual scowl deepening as he’s met with the corner at the flat of the stairway. His eye twitched, jaw clenching as he glared angrily at the rolled carpet leaning in the corner, which was only a foot short from where the ever so lonely ice skate hung against the yellowing wallpaper.

Drip.

His eyes drift to the resting spot of the lone skate. “Where is that second skate? Someone must have taken it! But who? Vixen? Surely not,” Vivere mumbled angrily, brow furrowed as his shadowed brown eyes swirled with everlasting agitation and confusion aimed at all things that lay before him in his world. He grunted angrily, sticking his hair back and out of his face with his left hand again, and forcing himself out of his frozen state of churning anxiety and growing melancholy for fear of what lay beyond the present. He continued down the rest of the stairs, steps now heavier as he passes by the strange door that lays at the foot of the wall to his left. Once he took the last step down to the house’s normal flooring, his nose scrunches in distaste at the wooden hatch that stood out quite boldly against its surroundings. How very distasteful. Vivere thought as he-

-turned away from the strange door. I ought to take it out sooner than later. The man looks back at the clock once more, noting the date that was included alongside it. 12/08. November? How peculiar! I could've sworn that it was October just yesterday. He huffs in annoyance before turning out a window, scowling deeper once more out at the familiar foggy setting of the small town in which he inhabited. Another truly pathetic November in Nauntriel. How very, very, truly distasteful.

Vivere made his way to the kitchen of his gloomy abode, taking out a slice of bread with his left hand and stuffing it into the toaster that lie by the stove with more force than necessary, hastily turning the machine on and pushing the button to allow the bread to be taken into the metallic box. The man nodded to himself as the machine began to heat up, turning away and leaning against the counter, peering through the walkway towards the base of the stairs, brow furrowing as the peculiar and unusually small doorway peered back at him.

Drip.

"Toast? Again? Come on, River, you can do better than that."

Vivere spun around towards the person that had spoken, glaring deeply as he's met with Vix's sneering face. "I thought you had stayed upstairs." His hair curtained his face again, and he shoved it back with unnecessary force. “How did you get here without using the stairs?”

Vix snorted, leaning back against the counter. "Why don't you just tie that back? Or, better yet, cut it." He gestured at his own hair with one hand, using the other to support himself up against the counter.

Vivere clenched his jaw. "That doesn't answer my question." He spun back around, facing away from Vix now, not wanting to deal with any more of his antics. Smoke began to rise from the toaster as Vivere walked out of the kitchen through the doorway opposite from where he entered, leaving the room behind. He walked down the hall and was met with the main entrance to his house.

Drip.

Vivere huffed and turned back-

again. He walked down the hallway and back into the empty kitchen. He paused for just a moment, curious as to where Vix had gone off to now. From behind him came the familiar sound of the door trying to be opened. Vivere whirred around back towards the entrance door almost immediately. The sound faltered, and the man narrowed his eyes but turned back around, walking through the kitchen.

Drip.

The sound came again, and Vivere quickly turned back around. His heart was pounding. He was sure he had seen the doorknob move. "Who's there?!" He called out towards the entrance. Everything in the house went eerily quiet as Vivere took one quiet step towards the door. Once more, the handle began to move in a way that suggested an attempted entrance. Vivere quickly froze once more, hands shaking as his mind raced.

Drip.

The movement ceased again, and Vivere slowly began to move, his muscles coiled like spring. A knocking at the door rung out, and Vivere nearly bolted, freezing in place with wide, tired brown eyes, no longer caring about the curtain of black hair limiting his vision. His whole body shook with the effort to remain still as he awaited the next event.

Drip.

A voice called from behind the entrance door as the door shook from the force of the bangs from the other side. "Vivere Ane Mortem, are you there?!"

Vivere froze at the deep and almost threatening voice booming from the end of the hall. He slowly lifted his right hand to move his hair back from his face, vision beginning to swim as his eyes met with the item he was holding.

Drip.

"Vivere! Open this door immediately!" The banging loudened as Vivere fell to his knees, letting out a pained sound as the object he held clatters to the ground. The right side of his face had a smear of crimson from the bladed shoe he had held in his right hand. His body was wracked with shaking from immense fear as his vision distorted. He crumpled onto the floor fully, eyes wide.

"Oh River, how could you do this to me?" Vix now stood

over Vivere as the banging continued, bending down towards him.

"Vivere Ane Mortem! We have a warrant for your arrest! Come out with your hands up or we will not hesitate to use force!" Viveres eyes filled with tears of anguish as Vix reached down to move Viveres hair from his face, his hand dissipating like smoke as it made contact, the rest of his figure following shortly after, replaced with an eerie emptiness. The banging continued before the door burst open. Vivere, now curled up on the floor, didn’t look up as the group of armed men raided his house, neither looking up nor resisting as one of them yanked him to his feet and roughly restrained him. The rest of the men continued their frantic search through the house, noticing the bread laying by the toaster in the old-fashion kitchen. 3 of the men start up the stairs, noting the skate that matched the one Vivere had held. The men in unison froze as they catch a most repulsive scent from up the stairs. They train their guns up the stairs before them, scanning every inch of the area as they crawled up with much caution. The smell becomes nearly unbearable as they reach the top, and they slowly creep towards the closed door, a few of the men noticing the drops of blood leading towards their destination. The man in front puts an arm up, gesturing for the others to stop as he reaches the door, kicking it open. A large waft of the stench blows over them like a wave. The man in front jerks his head away from the room in disgust and a deeper sadness. In the bedroom, on the forest-colored lounge chair, lay a corpse that grinned back at them.

Thats it!!!!
