When the sun apparently turns into a red giant, will it happen in like 3 seconds, or thousands of years? Like will we be able to see it go from tiny to "OMG WERE GONNA DIE"

1. WE won't see it. It'll be in millions of years. Maybe thousands if we're lucky.

2. It takes 8 minutes for the sun's light to get to us, so think they'll be dead before they see the sun expand, if option 1 was true. It happens in a span of time.
