moths are attracted to light because it blinds them and they struggle to go back into the dark

That sounds like they hurt themselves on purpose.

Also short story time:

When I went ot Africa, I saw this giant but beautiful moth. I wanted to take it home but like... I couldn't. After staring at it for a few a minutes it wasn't moving so I put it in a tree. The next day it was gone. I was sad. I lost my new best moth friend.
