Did you know that the Windsor Castle is over 900 years old? It is the oldest castle in the world that is still in use! Castles have been around for a long time, with different structures for specific needs and uses. This goes to show that castles have been used over time for defense, business, and living in.
To start off, castles have been used for defense in the past. One part of the castle that was used for defense was the spiral staircases. The article “Built for Defense” states that “These spiraling staircases were made in such a way that right-handed swordsman would have plenty of room to swing their swords, but only if they were at the top coming down.”. This would give the defenders the advantage because the attackers could not really attack unless they were left-handed. Another element of defense was the moat. The author of “Built for Defense” wrote “More often than not, a moat would not have any water. A moat would mostly consist of a large dug out space around the entire castle. The steep sides of the ditch would stop almost anyone from climbing out once they were inside.”. If there was actually water, it would be filled with runoff and waste that would make people very sick if they took a dip in it. Clearly, castles were used in the past for defense.
Furthermore, castles have been used over time for business. Tourism is a part of this business. “The Windsor Castle” states “Tourism is also very important to the castle. It brings in revenue but also gives people a chance to be near their Queen.”. Tourism is basically business, since it brings in money to probably for maintenance keep the castle standing and for other things. Special events and ceremonies are also business-related. The article “The Windsor Castle” states that “For some of the most trusted people in Britain, the castle is used for ceremonies and special government occasions.”.

It is also used to entertain national guests, as the Queen invites political leaders and such to probably discuss important matters while she entertains them. In a nutshell, castles have been used for business throughout time.
Last but not least, castles have been used as a living space for a long time. The royals did not actually live inside of the castle. The article “Built for Defense” implies that “Back in the olden days, kings and queens did not live in these uncomfortable castles. They would live in a special place built for them within the bailey.”. The inside of the castle held unfavorable living conditions, being hot and damp with the lack of airflow. Similarly, the Windsor Castle was used for living in as well. The author of “The Windsor Castle” wrote “For the past 1,000 years, Windsor Castle has served as a family home to the British kings and queens. Today it is an official weekend home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”. Queen Elizabeth II will also stay there for a month to celebrate Easter. This celebration is called Easter Court. To summarize, castles have been used throughout time as a living space.
In conclusion, castles have been used over time for different things. Three of these things are defense, business, and a living space. But there are many more uses and functions of a castle than just these three. There are dozens of different uses for a castle, and all of them are out there somewhere.
