So, basically I think the ancient people had made a early nether portal. One guy went in with a pig, as food. The portal wasn’t fully working right, and they got put together into the Piglen.

And I have a theory on way the want gold, too. They have this little bit of memory form when they were human, and know that gold is valuable. They chase you because they remember a little bit of their human life, and can’t stand the sorrow of remembering. They figure that they should just kill you, in hopes of getting gold that they know to be valuable.
